Filing an Actos Lawsuit
Actos (pioglitazone) is a popular prescription medication used to treat people with type 2 diabetes. Actos is part of the thiazolidinedione drug class and works by assisting the body in using insulin effectively and preventing the liver from producing too much sugar. Since Actos was first released, it has consistently been one of the best selling drugs in the United States.
Although Actos was once a popular and reputable medication, many experts and safety advocates begun to question its safety after it was linked with bladder cancer and other adverse side effects. Actos is no longer as widely recommended by medical professionals, has been removed from the market in several countries, and is at the center of numerous lawsuits

Actos & Increased Bladder Cancer Risks
After patients began reporting adverse side effects, Actos was soon associated with the development of bladder cancer. In early June of 2011, the French Agency for the Safety of Health Products withdrew Actos from the market due to high risks of bladder cancer. Soon after, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that using Actos for more than one year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer.
Other adverse side effects associated with Actos include:
- Increased risk of bone fractures
- Congestive heart failure
- Anemia
- Mild weight gain
- Painful urination or urinary tract infection
Because bladder cancer has been the most notable side effect of Actos, many patients have begun filing lawsuits against Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Actos' manufacturer. These lawsuits allege that patients suffered harm because Takeda did not ensure that Actos was safe for public use and that it did not adequately warn consumers of the risk of bladder cancer.
