A serious dust storm is to blame for the seven-car pileup that happened last week in Arizona.
Even though national weather reporters deemed the storm not serious enough to issue a warning, it was dense enough to reduce visibility for several drivers on one interstate. Police officers now believe that the worst portion of the storm hit just near Picacho Peak, causing a major car accident.
As a result of the crash, lanes in both directions were shut down for several hours as emergency crews attended to injured persons and cleaned up the wreckage. Two of the vehicles involved in the accident were tractor-trailer rigs.
In total, five people were brought to area hospitals for treatment. They were transported by ambulance as the air was too thick with dust to allow helicopter transport.
